Breast Surgeries

Enhancing what nature has given or restoring what illness has taken away. After over a decade of media attention, safety concerns and controversy, breast augmentation and breast surgery implants have become more popular than ever before.  Making the decision to undergo breasts surgery is a personal one and should only be made after you truly understand the potential risks and have consulted breast plastic surgeon.

There are those that find the benefits associated with breast surgery implants out way the risks and are well worth the cost of surgery.  Using implants after having the breast surgically removed following chemotherapy (breast reconstruction) can be an important step in mental/emotional recovery.  For some women increasing or decreasing the size of their breasts (breast augmentation and breast reduction) may dramatically improve their esteem and quality of life.

Again, one should always consult a cosmetic surgeon and if possible talk someone that has undergone the cosmetic procedure and ask them what it was like for them before and after breast surgery.

Keep in mind that every medical procedure has its own set of potential risks (such as: infection, permanent scars, blood clotting etc.).  Be informed and prepared to reduce your chances of complications.

Information on Breast Implants & Surgery

Breast implants come in many shapes, sizes, shell texture and are designed for different purposes.  The type of implant used is based whether the patient is in for reconstruction, replacement of pre exciting implants (this also know as breast revision), augmentation (increasing the size) or reduction (there are many times where implants may be used after a breast reduction to give them the desired shape and overall appearance).  There are mainly two types that cosmetic surgeons work with: one that filled with a saline solution and the other is filled with a silicone based gel.   The surface of the implant know as the shell can be pre filled with either compound to the desired volume/size or it may be filled during the procedure (this allows the client to see the actual size of the breast).  They have recently been using shells with a valve that allows for adjustments to be made after the surgery and recovery.

The controversial risks

Complications arising from breast augmentation have been a heated topic in health medical journals and at the FDA.  There are both long term and short risks to consider before getting breast surgery and after should you decide to remove them.

Complication may occur locally, both in the implant and around the area of the beast.  Most common of which are: infection, loss of sensitivity (there are cases where the nibble may become painfully sensitive as well), the implant may break or leak, Skin death (necrosis), capsular contraction (scar tissue that has formed around the implant may become hard and tight)  and the chance of having to undergo more surgery.  As with any medical procedure pain and tenderness is to be expected for some time after the breast surgery.   Cosmetic issues may factor in as well, such as: too big or too small and in general the overall look.

There are concerns associated with breast augmentation including: breast feeding and breast cancer detection.boob jobs

  • Breastfeeding:  Studies done at IOM (Institute of Medicine)  women who have undergone any form of breast surgery are at least 3 times more likely to have an inadequate milk supply and the quality / safety of the milk itself has been raised (though at this time more study is needed).  There is evidence however that mothers breastfeeding with silicone implants pass along a highly toxic form of platinum (high levels of toxic platinum have been found in the blood and urine of women with silicone breast implants as well as their children).
  • Brest cancer detection:  Concerns have been raised of the possibility that implants may hinder the accuracy of mammograms, in fact recent studies show that over 50 % of breast tumours may be hidden as a result of implants.  Some women fear that the pressing of the mammogram may rupture the implants and so, out fear, they don’t go.

Last but not least is the cost of breast implant (commonly referred to as boob job).  The life of implant is 7 to 12 yr.  The cost varies from breast surgery in Canada to the US and around the globe, however, the average cost is $8,000.  Factors including: anaesthesiology cost of the medical facility, type of breasts implant Etc.  Should you need to replace the implant you may be looking at a bill of on average $5,000.  Depending on the type of implant an IMR may be needed every few years to insure that it is not leaking, the cost of the MRI is $2,000 and is paid out of pocket.

Conclusions

It may be the best thing for one woman’s esteem or the chance to feel normal after terrible illness; it may also be a nightmare of complications and worries.  The truth is more study is needed (and being carried out,  there is however, strong evidence against silicone based implants) and above all else be informed both before and after your surgery.

Why Do Breast Implants Need To Be Replaced?
When it comes to breast implants one thing that must always be kept in mind is that they are made of something that will gradually breakdown overtime. As the implant gets older the walls of the shell may break down.
